But where in the world IS
              Sapillica, Peru???

and how do we get there from here???

Since Bishop Dan Turley's visit to Clinton in June to meet with parishioners and talk about how Prince of Peace Parish can help our brothers and sisters in Peru, the parish Social Action Committee and the Partnership With Peru Taskforce have been meeting regularly and conferring with parish staff to discern how best to get "there" from "here" -how to share our expertise in building a new parish with the people of La Virgen Pura y Limpia. At every gathering, ideas surfaced faster than secretaries could jot them down.

The Diocese of Chulucanas is in the northwestern corner of Peru. It is close to the border of Ecuador and not too far from the Pacific Ocean.

As a matter of fact, it is in the same time zone as Clinton during daylight savings time.

But that is where the physical similarity ends. The terrain and climate vary from desert plains to mountain forests. Earthquakes are not uncommon and drought is a constant worry.

Sister Phyllis Morris has helped more than one campesino (Peruvian farmer) build a well by hand with materials purchased with funds donated by friends in Iowa. Without a well, drought means famine for the campesinos and hardship for everyone.

Since the Diocese was first organized in 1964, many Peruvian women and men have entered religious life and the priesthood to serve their people. Still, most Catholics of the rural villages can receive the sacraments only once a year.

Pen Pals-Prince of Peace school children and religious education students will begin corresponding with the children from our sister parish.
Prayer Partners-All parishioners can become prayer partners with our sister parishioners in Sapillica. After all, Prince of Peace is in the midst of a building project as well! Our prayers for our campaign are being answered as pledges come in and land is purchased. Joining hearts and hands with another community will strengthen our resolve as it does theirs.
Personal visits-June is the best time to visit the Chulucanas area, according to Bishop Dan. Parishioners are already talking about getting passports and plane tickets and getting to know the people of La Virgen Pura y Limpia Parish firsthand.
Designated giving-Over $1,000 has been given to help our sister parish build a parish center. First Sunday collections are being shared. Sending money is the most efficient way to help from a distance.

Sapillica is pronounced:

Sa-pee-yee-ca.

The name is from the Quechua language, which is spoken by the indigenous people of the Andes Mountains
