PRINCE OF PEACE COUNCIL MINUTES
November 19, 2009
“Walking Together, Growing in Faith”
Opening Prayer:
Deacon Jeff read the Gospel according to John for Christ the King weekend. Mary Beth Butt, Mike Finn and Madonna Berry read the tasks of the Council. Father Tony asked that we all be the eyes and ears of our parish.

Guest Commentary: Steve Roling came to talk about the School Tuition Organization (STO). He passed out information on who qualifies for the credit, tax benefits, and federal deductions and how it can benefit you. It allows you to donate to a STO and receive an Iowa income tax credit of 65% of the donation amount. This only applies if you pay Iowa State Income Tax. Discussion followed.
Approval of Agenda: Approved as printed.
Communications: None
Approval of Minutes: Approved as printed.
Pastor’s Report: No written report. Father Tony mentioned the Newsletter was in the mail, Communal Penance scheduled for December 14 and 17 and Blue Christmas scheduled on December 21. The Diocesan Capital Campaign will end on the weekend of December 13th. Father Thom and Brenda Bertram are with the Youth at NCYC. Masses for the Christmas weekend are all scheduled.
Old Business:
- Classification of Committee assignments: Assignments are okay as printed. Question was on the Building & Grounds sub-committee under Finance which is where Steve Mangler will be. Bev will get copies to all Council members at the next meeting.
- Capital Campaign Update: Mike Rastrelli reported we have exceeded $350,000 with more to come. Working on the Phon-A-Thon portion now. Dave stated they have about $40,000 from the two Phon-A-Thons so far. Mike mentioned the confusion with the Annual Diocesan Appeal.
- Updates on the status of St. Irenaeus Church; Catholic History Center at St Boniface; Old Rectory: Stan mentioned the committee has not met yet. Ed Kross stated goal is to get heat into St. Boniface property.
- Ed wrote a letter to the group wanting the St. Irenaeus property stating conditions but no response as yet. Still actively pursuing bids for the Rectory. Ed also mentioned that Habitat was looking for property and we are going to donate two lots from the St. Irenaeus property, which is located on the NW corner of 29th Ave. North.
- Parish goals (see below … especially #3): Steve mentioned the wants of the council to build a parish hall. Finance Committee brought up bringing in RDG as consultants to get started. Other needs are a sprinkler system, which we have a bid on, and the canopy over the handicap area.
New Business:
- Approval or comments on parish handbooks: Dave mentioned the diocese is updating a number of policies from the latest edition of 2000. Discussion followed on some of the items. Steve made a motion, seconded by Bev that we accept the new handbooks. Motion passed.
- Discussion on the state of the Parish: Mike Finn stated we don’t let the parish know enough about what we do as a parish for the poor in the community. Discussion followed. Mike volunteered to be on the Charity committee. Dave mentioned we will be getting more lights on the outside and some signage at both entrances to our property. It was also mentioned that the garage is now up.
Prince of Peace School Report: Written report submitted. Ed O’Neill mentioned the Annual Dinner Auction which will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010. He mentioned this being their largest fundraiser and it will be in memory of Christy Roth. He also mentioned the students attending the NCYC in Kansas City. Ed also mentioned the SCRIP program.
COMMISSION REPORTS:
- Parish Life: Mary Beth said they served 241 at the Auxiliary Luncheon which is down from last year but the Country Store did well.
- Liturgical & Spiritual Life Commission: Father Tony said the meeting is scheduled for December 5th. Father mentioned the 5 PM Christmas Eve Mass is for the Children and they are all set up for overflow. It was mentioned that we will discontinue the Prayer of St. Francis being said before Mass, at least for the time being.
- Social Action Commission: No Report. Will have a report for the next meeting.
- Finance Commission: Ed stated we are at about 88% of are ADA commitment or $12,000 short. October offertory was slightly down. Ed again stated we are a very giving parish.
- Faith Formation: Written report submitted. Mary Jo mentioned the Mission in January from the Apostles of the Interior Life.
1. Evangelization Committee: Written reports submitted. Stan mentioned they are still working on getting the KXIX sign on the property.
- Stewardship Committee: Written reports submitted. Bev mentioned that Fr. Tony, Mary Jo, Dave, Ryan Steines and Kathy DeMong attended the Diocesan stewardship day in Solon. A Spiritual Bouquet is being prepared for our parish priests and will be presented at Christmas. Mary Jo mentioned that the welcoming committee reported they have received 35 new parishioners since August. Of the 35 names, 27 have been visited or contacted.
Next meeting will be January 21, 2010 @ 7:00 p.m. at the Parish Office.
