Fr. Tony mentioned that later in the meeting there would be time for open discussion.
He was recently appointed as Dean for the Clinton Deanery. He was impressed with
the "Taste of Peru" gathering. Father mentioned that 52 teens would
be leaving for NCYC next Wednesday night. He said that the Instruments of Peace
project is going well. Next he reported about a workshop he attended in Riverside,
Iowa. He learned about a program that will be started next fall in the Diocese
called " Why Catholic?" The program responds to three challenges that
the Catholic Church faces today. Our parish will take part in this project. Charlene
Builema, the editor of the Clinton Herald, interviewed Betty Mantsch, Dave Schnier,
and Fr. Tony about the various activities occurring in the parish. Fr. Tony said
to watch for this good news in the paper. Pizza potlucks have been held so we
can talk to families in our school about various issues affecting the school and
parish. Fr. Tony thanked all who helped with this year's Pork Dinner. Finally,
he reminded all pastoral council representatives to be involved in our parish
events. Presentation of ACRE results: Principal Nancy Peart, Campus
Minister Sharon Roling, and religion teacher Janelle Kross were responsible for
reporting the ACRE (Assessment of Catechesis/Religious Education) results from
Prince of Peace School. Students in grades 5, 8, and 11 are assessed. The test
measures faith knowledge and the affective domain. The results showed that the
students are growing in their knowledge of the Catholic Church. Curriculum changes
and new textbooks contributed to the growth in all three grade levels. Old
Business: Viability Study: Joe Leonard reported that Fr. Tony, Connie
Kissack, Betty Mantsch, and he had completed the study. The results indicated
that we are doing a good job in our parish. We are a viable parish. This report
will be turned in to the Diocese. New Business: Pastoral Council
Picture: Joe Leonard mentioned that we had taken this picture prior to our
meeting. This picture will be put in our new parish directory. Faith Facility
Report: Dick Roberts reported about the October 8 Master Planning Workshop.
He said there were 57 people present. The people first heard a presentation by
Brother William. Following the presentation, the people were divided into four
groups. The groups brainstormed answers to a list of questions presented by Joe
Lang. The groups then came together and shared their ideas. Joe Lang stated his
excitement about the agreement between groups about building a unique church.
He could feel the unity among the people present. RDG will develop an architectural
plan and then meet again with the Faith Facility members. This plan will be presented
to our parish in January. Prince of Peace School Report: A written
report was submitted. Diana Gray gave an overview of the report. She said the
middle school service day went well. Some old windows will be replaced in the
elementary building. An energy audit will soon take place. COMMISSION
REPORTS: Parish Life: Sister Mary Ann reported that the parish directory
project is going well. She encouraged all to get their picture appointments made.
Liturgical and Spiritual Life Commission: A written report was submitted.
Denise Laufenberg sa id they are excited about making the Peace Rosary Beads
and the Peace Prayer Book. Children's Choir is up and going. The adult choir will
begin this Sunday at 11:00. Social Action Commission; A written report
was submitted. Lenny Weih said that Habitat for Humanity needs board members from
our parish. A Victory Center dinner will be held next Wednesday. Their group discussed
goals for the year. Finance Commission: Ed Kross said his commission
is moderately concerned with envelope giving. Over the last several years, income
from envelopes had increased. Now we are $500 to $600 per week below budget. In
September, our parish needed to make up for the ADA shortage. We are anticipating
a large increase in heating costs. We will take up additional collections to cover
the heating costs. Our parishioners need to be reminded to keep up regular envelope
giving. Faith Formation: A written report was submitted. Marlys Lyons
asked if anyone had any questions. No questions were raised. OPEN DISCUSSION:
Joe Leonard and Father Tony explained that this would be a new part of each
council meeting. Each person present was given a chance to voice any questions,
concerns, or issues that might be on one's mind concerning our parish. A lengthy
discussion followed. Joe reminded people to write down their ideas and share them
next month, too. Joe asked which item we should discuss next month. Several people
mentioned issues concerning the youth of our parish. Fr. Tony suggested that we
invite the youth who will have gone to NCYC to come and share with us at our November
council meeting. While they are here, they can share anything with us they would
like, and we can ask them for their viewpoints. Father Tony led us in our
closing prayer. NEXT MEETING; Thursday, November 17, 2005,
7:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted: Marlys Lyons
