PRINCE OF PEACE COUNCIL MINUTES
October 15, 2009
“Walking Together, Growing in Faith”
Opening Prayer: Father Thom did a reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. We then followed with all singing the “Servant Song.” Father Tony went over the By-Laws of the Pastoral Council. All members have received their copy.

High School Representative: None
School Board Representative: None
Staff Present: Brenda Bertram, Annette Lyons
Finance Commission: Ed Kross
Excused Absent: Dave Schnier
Guest Commentary: Gabriela Egging came to talk about Foods Resource Bank. It is a Christian Response to World Hunger and we had been involved until the past two years. The project pairs farmers with churches. The churches donate monies for seed, fuel and sprays and the farmers donate their time and farm equipment to do the work. There is NO profit involved. They grow the seeds; they plant, harvest and take to the granary, then sell it. They take the money and send it to projects around the world. There are 15 members that work with FRB, mostly religious, who discover projects around the world that need to be funded. All are dealing with food sustainability. FRB would like to use about five acres of our land for this project. 100% of the profit goes to the project. Father Tony said it would be wise to put crops on our land to help the soil and said it is a win, win situation for all. Parishioners may donate a row of corn or beans if they choose. The projects are funded for five years only.
Approval of Agenda: Approved as printed.
Communications: None
Approval of Minutes: Approved as printed.
Pastor’s Report: No written report. Father Tony reported on the Diocesan Capital Campaign and stated we have around $230,000 pledged to date. There has been a good response from the people who have seen the video and we are thinking of showing it at the Masses one weekend. Father said there were five (5) people who went to Solon for a Stewardship Workshop Day. Father said the best word that can be used is “Discipleship”.
Old Business:
- Pork Dinner and Family Fest review - was a good year and lots of participation among the kids since it was such good weather.
- Policy on Parish Announcements, information, and fliers – Policy included. Charlie Minnick stated that they looked at General Announcements, Infomercials, Bulletin Inserts, Signage, etc. Also included is a copy of the request form to be filled out and sent to the appropriate staff representative for each commission. Once approved the information will be in the bulletin or on the kiosk in the gathering space on the weekends and in the office during the week. The purpose of this policy is to facilitate clear, consistent and effective communications for Mass announcements.
New Business:
A.Commission Assignments: Steve Cahoy has contacted some council members. Bev will have a complete list of the assignments at the October meeting. Steve Mangler has agreed to work on Building and Grounds which falls under the umbrella of Finance. There was a suggestion of putting Building & Grounds as a sub-committee under Finance. We could use more representation on Evangelization.
B: Open forum – concerns, questions, directions and goals of the Council for the year –
Steve Cahoy stated that he and Father Tony envisioned having an open discussion on our strengths, weaknesses and some of our opportunities. Father Tony thought we should utilize the council as the ears of the parish as to what we are hearing throughout the parish. Many things were discussed but needing a new hall was of most concern. After much discussion it was decided to add “Build a Parish Hall” as one of our Pastoral Council Goals. Mike Rastrelli suggested we develop a plan for a Parish Hall since the entire Council is in favor. Motion made by Mike Rastrelli and seconded by Mary Beth Butt that we develop a plan to erect a Parish Hall as soon as possible. Changing daily Mass from 7:00 am to 8:00 am has been a good move. Brenda said the kids would love to come in January and give a presentation on NCYC.
Faith Facility Report: None
Prince of Peace School Report: No report
COMMISSION REPORTS:
A.Parish Life: Mary Beth mentioned the upcoming Auxiliary Luncheon and Country Store to be held at St Boniface Hall on November 7th from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm.
B.Liturgical & Spiritual Life Commission: Father Thom mentioned for the month of October doing a special rosary on Tuesdays praying for priests before the 5:30 pm Mass and on Thursdays a short devotional for perpetual health before the 5:30 Mass..
C.Social Action Commission: No Report. Father Tony will be getting with Steve DeBo and Mike Finn. Brenda mentioned there were 164 walkers on the Crop Walk.
D. Finance Commission: Ed Kross stated we are still in the black after the July/August report. We are at 63% of our ADA goal. The new garage will be erected soon and we purchased a new lawn tractor. There was lots of discussion on the St. Irenaeus and St. Boniface properties. We want to be assured that the usage of the St. Irenaeus property would not be offensive to the people who worshipped there. Father mentioned that it would be nice if we could retain some lots for Habitat for Humanity.
- Do we wait to transfer ownership until we know they have the funds?
- Should we have the right of refusal should they try to sell at a later date?
- How many building lots do we want to retain for Habitat for Humanity? Father also mentioned there might be some lots on the St Mary property to donate to Habitat.
Ed shared that the St. Boniface group have now received their 501-3C. Much discussion followed.
E. Faith Formation: Written report submitted. Mary Jo reported on the success of the Jason Evert event and the Mission in January with Apostles of the Interior Life. Mary Jo stated their next meeting is October 27th.
1. Evangelization Committee: Father Thom mentioned they have finished the Disciples document and are starting to work on goal three (3). Stan mentioned they will be showing “Footsteps of God” at 6:00 pm at St. Boniface Hall.
F. Stewardship Committee: Odelia stated nothing special going on now. They will be brainstorming for the next meetings in January and February 2010.
Next meeting will be November 19, 2009 @ 7:00 p.m. at the Parish Office.
We finished with our Parish Prayer.
Respectfully submitted,
Bev Putman
