PRINCE OF PEACE COUNCIL MINUTES
May 18 , 2006
Walking Together, Growing in Faith”

Opening Prayer: Sister Mary Ann Phelan and all Council Members said the opening prayer, followed by a reading on Pentecost read by Mike Rastrelli, then reflections on how the Spirit has moved in our own lives and that of the parish.
Roll Call: Members present: Father Tony Herold, Father Thom Hennen, Mary Beth Butt, Fran Cornwell, Jim DeMong, Kathleen DeMong, Michelle Griffin, Denise Laufenberg, Joseph Leonard, Marlys Lyons, Beverly Putman, Tom VanBuer, Odelia Schrunk, Mike Rastrelli, Sister Mary Ann Phelan
Deacons Present: Ray Hilgendorf, Jeff Schuetzle
High School Representative: Kara Seitz
School Board Representative: Michelle Griffin
Faith Facilities: None
Staff Present: Brenda Bertram, Annette Lyons, Betty Mantsch, Dave Schnier
Finance Commission: Ed Kross
Excused Absent: Cathy Eggers, Bart VanderBleek, Lenny Weih, Chuck Rutledge, Art Donart, Mike Pittman
Guests: None
Approval of Agenda: Two additions added. Under New Business; B. Stewardship report and C. Parish Life Study.
Communications: Odelia reported on a letter received from the Diocese on a course being offered at Williamsburg. This position is for a Parish Life Administrator. The letter covered the many duties that come under that position. The cost is $350.00. Odelia stated anyone interested could give her a call.
Approval of Minutes: Approved as printed.

Pastor’s Report: A written report was submitted. Father Tony stated that there were 53 second graders who received their First Communion. He thanked all the catechists, teachers and religious education staff for their many hours of preparation. The architects for RDG were here on May 4th to begin another stage of our new church design. Father commented on the meeting on May 11th at St Joseph Church in DeWitt to receive the results of the Parish Life Evaluation and Father also wanted to commend all those who worked so hard on the Marian celebration which culminated on May 13th.

Open Discussion: Possible Usage of St. Boniface Church: Father Tony made a proposal that we look at forming a Clinton Catholic Cultural Center based around the St. Boniface property. St. Boniface Church is a pristine example of a pre-Vatican II Church structure. The purpose of this new non-profit corporation would be to preserve the legacy of the Catholic Church’s contribution to the history, culture, spirituality and education of the Clinton area. With this initiative, the parish would have control over the authentic contributions of Catholics to the area and tell the story of the Catholic Church in Clinton properly. The center could offer retreats, conferences, and educational opportunities as well as preserve with accuracy the history of the area. Much discussion followed with the consensus being that if a core group of people could be found to handle this project it would be a wonderful thing to do.

Old Business:
Election Update: Joe mentioned that we have five candidates for the Pastoral Council and four candidates for the School Board. The election will be held on Pentecost weekend. The bio’s will be in the bulletins on the weekend of May 27-28.
The candidates for Parish Council are Mary Jo Dopson, Marc Smith, Steve Cahoy, Tom Van Buer and Joe Leonard. If no more candidates come forth the only election will be for School Board.

New Business:
A. Choose Discussion Topic for June 15, 2006 Meeting. Hospitality and Pastoral Council Goals.
B. Stewardship Report: Jim DeMong gave a report on the Stewardship meeting of May 11th. We did some brainstorming about how to be a more welcoming parish. It was decided the Pastoral Council was the place to start. Several facets were put forth. Use the Pastoral Council as initiators. Welcome guests and new parishioners at each Mass. We need to extend ourselves beyond our comfort zone to make others feel more welcome. We feel the parish should have a Welcoming Committee to meet with new parishioners in addition to Father Tony. Have a Steward of the week. Have training sessions for Greeters and Ushers and call them the “Hospitality” ministry. Furnish nametags for all parishioners who are signed up for this Ministry. Focus on some of the little things we can do. These were some of the ideas put forth at our meeting. Some good discussion followed. It was suggested that members of the Stewardship committee attend the next council meeting.
C. Parish Life Study: Father Tony passed out the three documents covered at the May 11th meeting in DeWitt. They were Parish self-assessment, Demographic Data and Financial Data Analysis. The self-assessment study was very good. The Demographic data shows Mass counts going downward. This seems to be the area we need to work on and we need to set some goals in this area and Hospitality would be a start. It was suggested that maybe we need to do a survey to see how the parishioners feel we are doing in all areas.

Faith Facility Report: No written report. Dave Schnier said there would be a meeting with the architects and Brother William on June 20th. The Liturgical Design group will meet in the morning and the entire Task Force will meet in the evening. On June 22nd we will be meeting with RSI, the fund raising consultants, at 7:00 pm.

Prince of Peace School Report: A written report was submitted. Michelle Griffin said the Kehls have provided a wonderful scholarship for a graduating senior of up to $20,000. Our 5th grade students earned the first and third place awards at the Corp of Engineer’s Eco-Meet. The Sunset Social and annual Raffle fundraisers are moving forward. The high school students completed their annual service day in our school, parish and community. They provided over 300 hours to various organizations and our teachers and volunteer adults contributed another 76 hours.

COMMISSION REPORTS:
Parish Life: No written report. Sister Mary Ann reported that the pictorial directory would be out in late May or early June. They are also planning a June 25th potluck.
Liturgical & Spiritual Life Commission: Written reports submitted. Denise stated all the notes on the meetings are in the handout.
Social Action Commission: Written reports submitted. Since Lenny and Chuck were absent, Father Tony stated the last meeting of the summer would be May 24th.
Finance Commission: Ed Kross reported on the “Building Peace” Campaign with $3.5M pledged and $2.7M received. Annual Diocesan Appeal is about $10,000 short of goal. If all the pledges come in we will have made goal. The Catholic Messenger is $4700 short. The St. Pat’s property has been sold. We are still planning on a Capital Campaign in the spring of 2007. Ed said the Finance Council is planning on having the proposed budget to the Council by the June 15th meeting.
Faith Formation: Written reports submitted. Marlys stated we have the minutes and she asked Brenda Bertram to report on Youth Ministry. Brenda stated they have a schedule for the summer and have scheduled two weeklong Christian Leadership camps on July 16-21 and July 23-28. They also have a 3-day Catholics In Action trip planned. Betty Mantsch stated that Ron Hodges has completed his seminary training and will be ordained this summer. Ed Kross reminded us of the Wills Seminar at St. Boniface Hall on Wednesday, May 24th.

Father Tony led us in our parish prayer.

NEXT MEETING: Thursday, June 15, 2006, 7:00 P.M. at St. Boniface Hall.

Respectfully submitted: Beverly Putman
